It’s no surprise that software keyboards lack tactile feel. As on-screen text input becomes the norm, we’ve been playing around with some ideas on how to get more feel back into those omnipresent softkeys.
Here’s a quick mock-up we created using a screen protector and a hot-glue gun; it’s incredibly simple and the keys still work as expected. The glue isn’t quite transparent (somewhat occluding the graphical letters), but it works well enough to get a sense for the difference a tactile screen keys can make.
Albeit super low-fi, we wanted to share our iPhone mod as a conversation starter about richer user interfaces on otherwise flat mobile devices. Enjoy!
